I went to Sweetie Pie's on Manchester. This restaurant has been taunting me for some time. In 2008 they were voted best soul food in St. Louis by the RFT as well as having their signature mac n cheese featured on the foodnetwork. If this wasn't enough motivation to go to the restaurant it is also conveniently located only five minutes away from SLU, nestled in the up-incoming area appropriately deemed "The Grove." So when I was trying to think of something cute and fun to do with my girlfriends for Valentine's day the idea of going to "Sweetie Pie's with my sweetie pies" was a no brainer. I have to say I was not disappointed.
All the reviews of the establishment led me to think that it was sit-down service style, but upon arrival I was taken aback by the cafeteria line that was splayed out in-front of me. Sweetie's is open from 6:30AM to 8:00PM Monday thru Saturday and gathering from what I saw if you wanna get fed you come early. The line got pretty long around 6:00PM. Once you get in line you have a choice of one of the 5 specials of the day and then you can pick 2 or 3 of the "vegetables." It was Friday so fish was on the line twice and there were also 2 chicken options and then they had Spaghetti for the undecided. Making my way through that line was mighty hard. I wanted to try it all, but alas I stuck with baked chicken, mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, cornbread and a sweet tea. At the end of the line you pay (whole meal with drink was $12 and they say that credit/debit can only be used with purchase of $10 or more) and then your waiter graciously takes your food and seats you. Once we sat down the real treat began.

There just isn't enough praise I can give these people. Sweetie Pie's serves up hot delicious food and makes it look so easy. Surprisingly my guests and I were not that impressed by the mac n cheese, which we all thought would be the real winner. It was a good dish and perhaps my prejudice arose from the fact that I got the last helping out of a large chafing dish that should have been taken off the line before I was served. Nonetheless the composition and the mixtures of the cheeses were good. I could spot an obvious cheddar and the presence of sour cream. The topping on the mac was unexpected, it wasn't simply a crust of cheese it was more complex and delicious. I also had the baked chicken, which was delectable and moist. The seasoning rub under the skin was great. I also tried some of their fried wings and I wasn't that impressed. Again I think I have a bias when it comes to fried chicken. I like mine juicy and breaded with spice. This was more of a dry batter that didn't allow for the chicken to retain a lot of moisture, but it was still decent. I loved their cornbread. I think I managed to eat mine and almost everyone else at the tables. You can tell the recipe has been perfected over the years because more often than not making cornbread in a large quantities can turn out disastrous (or at least it has for me). I also have to comment on how great the sweet tea and lemonade were. My friends couldn't stop raving, well they did stop once they drank vast amounts and realized they were drinking pure sugar. We did manage to make one amazing Arnold Palmer out of both of them though.

Overall I thought that Sweetie Pie's was good. The staff and people were friendly and helpful (especially when they realized we had no idea how to work the line) and our waiter Clark was on point all night. I definitely will have to give this place another try. There were just too many side dishes that I wasn't able to enjoy (the corn, okra, and greens looked and smelled amazing). I will definitely shelve the mac n cheese next time and spread the love around. I recommend if you are in the area and gotta a taste for something mighty rich you hit up Sweetie Pie's and you should probably take your sweetie pie with you.

It may not be Oktober... but who cares?

This weekend I was driving on South Grand and came across 2 eating establishments that really got me excited! They both serve German cuisine and are located only 15 mins away from SLU. The first one is the Feasting Fox which is located on the corner of Meramec and Grand. The establishment has been around since 1914. It was built by August Busch, which weaves it into the deep Anheuser Busch tradition in St. Louis.
The second eating establishment is also regarded as one of the most recognizable St. Louis sights next to the Arch and the AB brewery. The Bevo Mill is a giant windmill on Gravois, however don't let the exterior fool you. Despite the very industrious appearance this windmill is filled with tasty delights. The Mill first opened it's doors to the public in 1917. This restaurant is also linked to the AB legacy. August built the mill in 1915.

These two historic spots are places on my short list of restaurants I want to try. The only problem is what to order? It all sounds so GOOD! I definitely will have to keep thinking.

Things to be thankful for...

Today is Thanksgiving, which truly is a food-lovers holiday. So I will take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy holiday! Also I wanted to share some of my favorite holiday food offerings.
1. Turkey

2. Pumpkin Pie

3. Stuffing

4. Chocolate Pies

5. Noodles

I don't have time to blog about these things at present. This is due to my current food coma, but I will share my insights on these things later. Between all the time I try explaining them and the rest of the time I spend yearning for one. I should have found the time to blog about it. It really is an experience and to everyone who doesn't know I will explain the concept.

The horseshoe originated in my hometown of Springfield, IL. The exact origin is unknown, but this doesn't keep people from staking claims on the idea. The actual recipe though is pretty basic, but everyone has their different adaptations. The base for the horseshoe is toast, either Texas style or really any bread of your choosing. Then you layer on the meat portion. This is where people get creative. I have seen everything from the very traditional hamburger patty to chicken, turkey, pastrami, roast beef, chorizo and tofu. I really enjoy the chicken patty at Bernie and Betty's, but everywhere else I try and stick to hamburger just so I can adjust to the nuances of the different styles. After you have the meat decision taken care of next comes the fries. For some people styles of fries are very important. I personally just enjoy fries with good seasoning. No plain-jane salt for me please, but others go off the styles like crinkle, steak, or any other distinction you can surmise. After the fries are piled on then it is time to add the CHEESE. To me personally this is what makes or breaks a horseshoe. Everything can be so-so about the horseshoe, but when you add a great cheese sauce it all just falls into place. Personally I prefer an yellow cheddar. This blasphemy to those who love the white cheddar sauce of D'arcy's Pint. D'arcy's has been featured on the FoodNetwork for their famous shoes. Don't get me wrong the white cheddar is tasty there is just something about that yellow cheese that gets me.

Anyways the horseshoe is a Springfield delicacy. Other places may have something similar or try and imitate, but there is only one original. I suggest you either make your way up I-55 to get one(God knows it's the only reason I go home), or you head out to Schnuck's and gather up the ingredients to make your own unique horseshoe.

Cupcakery Cult

One of the best places by far in St. Louis is the Cupcakery. There are traditional corn dogs, cheese curds, french fries, pickles, and then you move on to your more extreme fried candy-bars, Twinkies, and Oreos. In fact in the past couple of years a stand has been established that specializes in frying whatever you want. All you have to do is bring them the item that you would like to be deep-fried (the item has to be edible) and they batter it up and throw it on in for you. I haven't actual used their service, but in the future I might have to take advantage. Anyway so this past Friday as I was traveling through Illinois I stopped at one of my favorite places Bandanas Bar-B-Q. I usually enjoy their smoked turkey lunch plate with the sweet N smoky sauce. The hardest part about ordering this meal though has always been picking only 2 of their great sides. Usually I go with their coleslaw or their potato salad, but on this day I was intrigued by fried corn. I had only glanced at it before on the menu, but today I had the crazy hankering to actually try it.
When my order came to the table I have to admit I was intimidated by the huge fried corn cob in front of me. I practically ate my entire meal except for the corn, then finally I tried it and it wasn't for me. When they fry the corn it traps all the juices inside and leaves the outside crispy. I just felt the texture was off. I wish I could have gotten a picture of it, but alas I didn't capture it. I am just going to have to trust that people will try it for themselves, because even though I didn't like it I could see how someone might. Anyway I guess I know something that I won't be taking to the state fair to get fried next year.

June, A Month For Dairy

Like I state in my "About Me" section I really love dairy. It might have to do with the fact that I was raised on it since birth or that I just am extremely partial to anything fatty and cholesterol filled. Any way you cut it I am majorly hooked. So it comes as no surprise that I am overjoyed that June is national Dairy month!

You might ask: What does Dairy month mean? Is eating Dairy celebration enough? Or do I need to do something more drastic like seek out Dairy cows and praise them for their contribution to the world? The National Dairy Council along with the Midwest Dairy Association have all the answers to these questions and much more on their website. They state that the month is used to, "highlight the benefits of dairy foods which are the focus of the season... and to get out the message of supporting the nation's farmers to the public." So it is my duty as a champion of the dairy industry to put the word out and make you aware of the Dairy industry and how important it is to support them! So get out there and eat some dairy...mmmm ... ice cream.

Ho What??? The small establishment is located on Gravois near Soulard in St. Louis. They are known for their fried chicken, reasonable prices, and kitchy décor. Any patron can tell you that the food is served fast and hot and the waitresses are generally friendly. I have been eating there regularly for the past 2 years and still haven’t grown tired of their flavor.

Every time I go I have a huge struggle. Whether I should switch it up and order something that isn’t their ½ a chicken for 6.95 or not. I scour the menu searching for something that sounds good enough to make me switch, but I always come up empty handed. It isn’t that everything else sounds bad or I am afraid it won’t be good. It is just that their chicken is just SO GOOD. I know chicken, and I used to think I knew what I liked when it came to fried chicken. Before I went to Hodak’s I was only a fan of flour breadings. I just didn’t like the taste and texture of cracker or penko. That was until I tried Hodaks. As far as their recipe I don’t know it for certain. So when I talk about the recipe it is simply conjecture without any actually proof, but from what I know and what I have eaten Hodaks uses a dense cracker coating that is seasoned lightly. This coating allows the chicken to retain moisture really well after it is fried. The moisture is what sets them apart. The ½ is served with heaping helping of fries and cole slaw. The cole slaw is also done really well. For those that don’t like either fries or coleslaw they are more than happy to substitute. I definitely recommend Hodak's for anyone looking for some good food for a low price

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://layoffmeimstarving.blogspot.com/2008/06/ho-what-hodaks.html' title='Ho What??? This absence was more than the homemade fair their mothers made or the representation of all of the food groups. It was Panera Bread. All throughout high school (and for some of us college) Panera was a staple in our lives. For those of you in St. Louis who only know it as Bread Co., there isn't the fear of living in a place sans the scrumptious delights found at your neighborhood franchise. St. Louis is home to this national chain that now reports over 1,100 stores in 40 states. Panera is quickly becoming one of the nations leading franchises and this year it became a publicly traded company on NYSE. With this exponential growth in the past few years there is some fear that the quality we have grown to expect will dwindle. There is a fight to combat this possibility by tightening the criteria of owning a Panera franchise. The laundry list of requirements can be found on the company's website. With this said it is important to remember why we frequent the establishment to begin with. The food.
There is hardly a break from college where you can't find me or my friends enjoying the offerings of our 2 Paneras in my hometown of Springfield, IL. Most people are drawn to there economic "you pick 2" option. At least this seems to be the clear winner when it comes to those I dine with. There are just so many options on the menu and with ability to pick 2 among them makes for seemingly endless combinations. There are however favorites among the menu. The soups they produce are just in one word, delectable. Whether it be the staples like Broccoli Cheddar, French Onion, and Chicken Noodle or the rotating daily choices of Tomato Bisque, Baked Potato, and Cream of Chicken & Wild Rice. They all have there own unique flair and make you feel like you are getting a steal when you order them. The sandwiches, which they offer cold or hot (Panini style), are also quite tasty. The sandwiches showcase the variety of bread, which is also produced in each stores bakery. The salads are the other anchor of the menu. They generally rotate with the season. This is dismaying to those of us who pick our favorite and are upset when it is gone until next summer (i.e. the glorious tomato and mozzarella salad that I live off of in the summer). The salads generally combine some rustic lettuce with a heavy amount of toppings and dressing. Another aspect of Panera is their bakery section. It is too amazing for words and I could even devote a whole other blog specific to it. The amount of items that they prepare is amazing and makes you feel like the it is unique to the store. However this not the case, but there is something to be said about the ability to go to a restaurant and expect what will be there, that is why each store carries perennial favorites. Panera is definitely a force to be reckoned with in the food world. It is this idea of upscale bistro style sandwiches, salads, and soups coupled with the Parisian inspired bakery that has propels Panera into its own catagory of dining.

(Below: Tomato Bisque and French Baguette.)

Taking matters into your own hands.

Just a quick note on how little self control I have when I want something. Bobby was challenging the Pretzel King of Philadelphia and his signature cheese sauce. I was so taken by the episode it left me jonesing for a pretzel. Just watching those fortunate people on TV enjoy both competitors creations spurred me into action. It didn't take me but 2.5 minutes to find and print the recipe on Foodnetwork.com.
The next day instead of doing the right thing and replicating the magic I saw on television, I unfortunately made the trip to my local Auntie Anne's. This quelled my craving for the time being and about 3 weeks later I finally got around to making my own. I kind of scrimped on the ingredient list. Where Bobby calls for "light brown muscovado sugar", I employed the brown sugar I had around the house. I also flaked on buying unsalted butter and had to use the margarine I already had. All seemed to be well with the rather complex directions until I got to the point of rolling out my dough.
At this point the smell of dough had intoxicated me and there was no obstacle big enough to keep me from enjoying my finished pretzel. I had seen the employee's of my local Auntie Anne's knead and work the dough a million times. I always thought it looked fun, but I was sorely mistaken. The frustration overtook me after my first few failed attempts. My father who had once worked in a donut bakery actually had to come in and save the day before I had a total melt down. The results of all of this were extremely fat pretzels that looked nothing like the models of perfection I had seen on TV. I finished out the rest of the directions and patiently waited for them to bake.
Upon seeing them out of the oven I was amazed. The egg-wash amazingly had turned them to a beautiful golden brown. I also recommend using the parchment paper that is called for. I did not and had to scrape the cookie sheet in order to remove them. The egg-wash during the baking binds quite thoroughly to the pan and makes the task of removing the treats rather difficult. After this tribulation I finally got to taste the fruits of my labor and it was definitely worth it. The dough is rich, sweet, and salty. It is paired brilliantly with any form of cheese. Bobby used a queso poblano and I ended up with a Velveeta concoction my sister created on the fly. I am sure both were amazing additions to the pretzels.
Overall I rate this recipe very tasty. The directions are very thorough and when followed closely it yields great results. Like I stated before there is a little wiggle room with some of the ingredients I just wouldn't take too many liberties. The only part I found extremely difficult was rolling out the dough and creating the signature pretzel shape. If you are like me and struggle with most basic motor skills it might challenge you, but the pretzels are worth it. I settled for huge rotund pretzels and the only down side was that in some cases the middle was a little chewy. However don't let this deter you from this creation. There is a definite reason Bobby Flay overthrew the Pretzel King.

(Below: My Mother and I basking in the amazing pretzels we had just created.)

Finals Cravings

I thought I would start out with chatting about what my current favorite dishes are. It is finals time here in the land of college so I am definitely craving some comfort food and this is deeply reflected in my choices. So with no further ado here are my top 5 in no specific order: 1. MACARONI N CHEESE. This is a consistent dish on my food radar. I have always had a deep connection with macaroni for some reason. Maybe it was that it was the first thing I cooked on my own or was a staple of my childhood diet? Anyway you cut it this food is one of my all time favorites. Lately I have been experimenting with different types of cheeses to add to the sauce and whether it is better to start with a rue or not... I will have to report back with my findings. 2. BISCUITS. I haven't had time to make biscuits from scratch lately, but that hasn't stopped me from enjoying them. I have been relying heavily on the help of Pilsbury's Southern Style, which might seem like blasphemy to any biscuit lover. I really do enjoy there taste and they are just so convenient! 3. RED VELVET. Words can't even describe how much I love Red Velvet. I think my fist exposure to it was watching Steel Magnolias when I was like 8 and the infamous armadillo cake hit the screen. After a few attempts to make my own and the current cupcake on special at St. Louis's own Cupcakery I have fallen in love all over again. 4. FRIED RICE. Nothing soothes the soul like a fresh plate of fried goodness. I love when you combine things that are healthy like veggies and then find a way to devalue there nutrition. There is nothing better and in a place like Saint Louis there are literally hundreds of asian restaurants that offer many different styles of this dish. 5. GRANOLA. When you need maximum brain power it is usually a good idea to have some form of granola on hand. It is just one of those things that makes you feel good when you eat it and there are also a multitude of ways to enjoy it. During finals this week I will no doubt be partaking in some granola treats!
